We are off to Barbados in, oh, about 12 hours. That is, if the storm currently dumping all the water on New York lets up a bit to allow flights to actually be on time. It looks like it will, though.
Barbados is where we will hang out with friends of mine from graduate school, and drink much rum, and watch cricket at the cricket world cup. We will have a fantastic time.
So I will talk at you all in a week or so! Here's some music. It's more interesting than my ramblings, anyway.
We have:
Modest Mouse - Neverending Math Equation
Deborah Harry and Iggy Pop - Well, Did you Evah! (the Cole Porter song)
Pete Yorn (covering the Smiths) - Panic
Shihad - My Mind's Sedate
There's some variation for you! A bit of yelling, a bit of quiet stuff. Enjoy.
On Monday night we went to see Iggy Pop and the Stooges play at the United Palace up in Washington Heights. They have a new album out, right? The Weirdness, their first album since Raw Power in 1973. mr. gaspode and I saw the Stooges play a couple of years ago at Little Steven's Underground garage rock festival and they were awesome, so we were looking forward to the performance. The new album though... yeah, I'd listened to it a couple of times and was kind of meh about it. But one should never discount the power of a live Iggy Pop performance. We had a great time, and even the new songs sounded fresh and urgent when performed live. The United Palace is a great venue, too. We'd never been to a show there before, but will definitely go back.
Yessss, I remember the famous Pulp album debacle. This is Hardcore was released in 1998? Thereabouts? I didn't listen to it until the last year of my PhD, which was 2001. Then, of course, I listened to it constantly.
ANYWAY. I can't really give my opinion on Neon Bible just yet, but I really like this, the opening song of the album. Maybe I'll report back in in a month or two.
Of course, then it gets tough. What song could be worthy enough to represent the comeback of my (wannabe) daily song post? In the end, I just randomly generated one on itunes. Luckily, it was one that I like. So I guess this album came out last year, to quite a bit of fanfare as the band is composed of Jack White, Brendan Benson and... some other dudes. It's actually a really solid album, although honestly I don't find anything earth shattering in it. I listen to it quite a lot though.
